The northern half of New Zealand is going off. There are marlin everywhere and on the West coast the smaller boats are getting shots from marlin that run into double figures on the days that they’re out. Crossing the Manakau Bar has paid dividends for a number of anglers and one boat landed one from a quadruple strike yesterday. Further north at the three Kings, both the King bank and the Middlesex bank are firing. With some of the charter boats reporting up to 20 shots the day the fishing is outstanding. It seems to be difficult to make a lot of those strikes stick but Prime-time for example accounted for 40 marlin in their last trip over 4-5 days. There also seems to be plenty of Yellowfin in amongst the marlin and it’s great fishing in anyone's language.
The fishing has slowed out of Whangaroa but the water is still good with no doubt the fish will come back on the bite. Last week a very respectable black marlin just over 200kg was weighed.
Further south at Waihau Bay the action has also been hot. One small tinny reportedly caught six marlin over a few days.
It all looks good for a great season and the Ultimate team are looking forward to having a few dustups in the next week also. We’ll keep you posted. |
